The Commissioned Conscript

Jeff looked back to the night sky.The stars twinkled,those shimmering diamonds. He felt like he wanted to reach out and grab a fistful of them in his right hand, steal their eternal beauty and wealth, to hold it tightly in his grip. To pocket it and take it home with him ,in his hip pocket. Hoard the loot for himself so to speak.  A slight gust of wind blew in through the open doors, tickling his eyes, massaging his tired eyes. He reached up with both hands and rubbed the bridge of his nose on both sides as though he was scratching an annoying itch. It seemed really quiet now.With no customers in sight,the place seemed really dead. None of the guys were talking and that really exacerbated a growing sense of anguish that was welling up within his chest. Just like the silence in the old movies, it was too quiet. He could just picture John Wayne staring over the top of the overturned wagons, muttering to a crouched, pistol-drawn cowboy on either side of him,"I don't like it,it's too damn quiet,it ain't right I tell ya!........
