It was after midnight as we stepped outside the building, and no taxi was in sight.
“We are only six blocks away from out hotel. Let’s just run for it,” Hazel bravely suggested.
Now, having grown up in Washington State, I was familiar with Seattle and knew the city had some dangerous parts of town, and we were in one of them. I hated to put the Lord to the test, but what else were we to do? So, bravely, we started off. We had gone only a few blocks when our worst fears began to come true.
“Do you hear footsteps behind us?” Hazel gasped.
“Yes! Let’s run.”
We pulled off our high heels and started to run, and the footsteps behind us began to run too.
“I’m praying real hard, and we’re staying ahead of him so far.” Hazel smiled.
Hazel and I worked out at the gym three times a week so were in very good shape and had a great deal of energy that a wino probably would not have unless he was on some sort of enhancing drug.
I saw Hazel’s eyes grow large as the footsteps did indeed begin to catch up with us.
“Just two more blocks and we are there.” I tried to encourage her and me too.
Then, as the footsteps just about overtook us, we saw the answer to our prayers, a most welcome sight. There on our corner stood a policeman, and he was looking at us. We heard the footsteps cross the street, and we ran up to the policeman.
“You ladies should not be out on the streets at this hour. Where are you going?”
I told him and pointed up the street to our hotel.
“Go ahead, and I’ll watch you until you get there.”
“He probably thinks we’re streetwalkers too,” Hazel muttered. “Who else would be out at this hour unescorted?”
We put back on our shoes. The cement sidewalk had put holes in our nylons, but we were safe. We walked the last block, softly singing praises and thank-you’s to our God. God had indeed taken care of his foolish children, and I’m sure He hoped we had learned our lesson.

About the Author
Dr. Joanne Nelson king Brown was born and raised in Bellingham, Washington. She received her education at Northwest Christian University, Butler seminary, Phillips University, Drew University, and College of Languages in San Jose, Costa Rica. She and her husband received their Doctor of Divinity degree from Universal Bible College in Texas just two weeks before he died of a massive heart attack. She was left with three children, one in grade school, one Jr. High and one in High School. She now resides in Salem, Oregon. She has been widowed three times.
