About the Author

Born in 1946 in the rural town of North, South Carolina, she is the granddaughter of farming sharecroppers. Her grandmother insisted that her only son, Bernetha’s father, obtain an education, refusing to keep him out of school to plow fields or to pick cotton. To a youngster, however, life on the big farm was an adventure! In 1949 Bernetha’s “sweethearts since high school” parents relocated their little family to Columbia, SC. A 3-room rented frame house was to be their home for six months. Now a veteran, her father purchased his first home on the GI Bill, moving his wife and three little girls into a brand new house with shiny floors, real closets, and indoor plumbing with running water! Wow! This was Bernetha’s first miracle as a little girl! Reflections of her childhood memories of “going down the country” to her Gran-me’s; living in a suburban community with Momma and Daddy and her eight little sisters and brothers; experiencing the “growing up” years interacting with family and friends; falling in love and marrying a wonderful husband; attending church and maturing as a christian, are highlighted through poetry. Bernetha’s discovery was that life’s happy experiences and relationships can be elevated to a beautiful song!
