Two Weddings and a Funeral

Roy Morris was the first to arrive. He was a tall young man who was extremely handsome. He had an abundance of black hair, very dark, large brown eyes, a straight nose and olive skin. He appeared to be in his late twenties. His eyes fell immediately on Kathleen, his face lit up, and he went towards her with outstretched hands. Kathleen gave him hers, a smile on her lips, and turned to her aunt. “This is my young man, Aunt Bernice,” she said. He held out his hand. “I hope you'll like me, Mrs. MacAlister,” he said. “Kathleen tells me that other than her sister, you're the only relation she has in the world.” Bernice's face was interesting to behold, for the astonishment, which for an instant she could not conceal, quickly vanished and her face assumed an expression of gracious welcome. But for a moment she was at a loss for words. “I know you'll like him, Aunt Bernice,” said Sarah, turning to her with that sweet smile of hers. “But I would ask that you reserve some of your love for David. I might as well tell you that he is very big and massive, with a bald head, and a large, fat, clean-shaven red face, and a booming voice.” Kathleen and Roy burst out laughing. But Bernice was taken aback. She knew instinctively that Sarah was making fun of her fiance. It confirmed her fear that she did not love him, that her marrying him had a deeper meaning, which only Sarah knew. She gave her a questioning look. But there was no time for any further discussion for the butler flung open the door and announced: “Mr. David Ramsey.” There entered a young man who appeared to be in his early thirties. He was slight, of average height, with fair hair, and blue eyes. He was not particularly good-looking, but he had a pleasant, amiable face and a charming smile. Sarah introduced him to her aunt. “Aunt Bernice, this is David, my fiance,” she said.
