The room seemed to grow darker, and Curtis was now having trouble making out Stedman's shadow. He was beginning to grow uneasy. Then Stedman spoke. "Light is an illusion, Sergeant Knight. It gives people false hope. When it disappears, it is replaced by fear. People fear the dark. They are frozen by it, unable to confront their own mortality." "Listen, um, Mr. Stedman, look I---" "People think Hell is fire and brimstone," Stedman continued, cutting Curtis off mid-sentence. "In truth, it is a numbing darkness, and endless void without substance or a sense of self. It is, my dear boy, a deep and bottomless pit which you will never crawl out of."

About the Book
There is a time in winter when the sun stands still in the sky. When this solstice arrives, so does the Dark. It feeds upon the ambitions, greed, corruption, and fears of the citizens in each town it visits. When a tall and mysterious stranger arrives in tiny Sistersville, WV, on a cold December night, Sergeant Curtis Knight is faced with the toughest case of his career. A waitress dies, a small crippled boy vanishes from his home, and a blizzard descends upon the Ville. As Sergeant Knight pieces together the clues, the Dark begins to feed.
About the Author
Steven E. Winters spent twenty-three years working in law enforcement. He was born and raised in Sistersville, WV where he grew up learning about the legends and folklore of his hometown and the Ohio Valley area. He currently resides near Wrightsville Beach, NC
