4:00 AM on June 2 came early. Matthew rousted his roommate out of bed who stumbled out the door to warm up the car. Matt grabbed his duffle bag and followed him. He was full of mixed feelings. He should be spending the summer with his family and working on a position for this fall. He worried that Brenda may become a problem. She perplexed him in so many ways. He wasn’t sure if she really liked him, was punishing him, testing him or trying to prove she was a better woman than he was a man. Matthew found the dig team standing near the US AIRWAYS ticket counter. Professor Renfro was handing out tickets. Security took a little longer than they expected because a number of their duffle bags were searched. With the time zone changes, they landed in Los Angeles just after 1:00 PM, changed planes and departed for Tahiti on an overnight flight. Ever since Pittsburgh, Brenda had not said a word to him. She surprised him by sitting next to him on the flight to Tahiti. She smiled at him but did not engage in any serious conversation. For dinner Matthew drank Sprite. Brenda had red wine. The stewardess kept filling her glass and she kept drinking. It bothered Matt some. Not that he had a thing about wine, but she said she wasn’t much of drinker. What other lies had she told him? She pecked at her supper but finally ask the stewardess to take it away. The wine glass stayed. “Dr. Matthew, do you like girls,” she said with a slight slur in her voice. “Oh my God, she’s drunk, here is comes,” he thought. “I like all kinds of people, why do you ask?” “I’ve never met a man quite like you. When we get married would you make love to me or would we have to adopt or just hope for an immaculate conception?” “If you keep drinking that wine, you won’t be a good catholic soon.” “What the hell are you talking about?” “You’ll become a pagan praying to the commode in the lavatory.” He turned to look at her but she had nodded off with her head leaning against his right shoulder. He grabbed the glass of wine before it spilled. He ask the stewardess for a couple of blankets and a pillow, lifted the arm rests up on both sides of her seat and started to cover her with a blanket. Before he could get started, she slide down with her head ending up in his lap and her legs awkwardly twisted with her feet still on the floor. He reached over her to lift her legs up on to the empty seat on her right side but as he did she rolled onto her back. His right hand was squeezed between her thighs. Across the aisle, two men were enjoying the show.

In approximately 4300 BC, God destroyed most of the life on the planet in a great flood. Many think the next equivalent event will be Armageddon. The aliens were suffering with severe over population and needed to increase their real estate holdings. They were ecstatic when they discovered Earth. They built a covert operating base in the South Pacific Ocean and began the construction of a mega space craft capable of moving earth to their solar system. In the summer of 2027, a freak storm blew a ship heading for Pitcairn Island in French Polynesia onto an invisible island. The volunteer archeological dig team on board soon discovered that time and distance were relative, that the laws of physics extended far beyond what Newton and Einstein could imagine, and that humans were not alone in the universe.
About the Author
J. Wayne Stillwell is a native of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. After serving thirty-four years as a naval officer, he completed a second career as vice president for an R&D company. He is currently an independent consultant and fiction writer. He received his BS in electrical engineering from Purdue University, master’s degree in physics from the Naval Post-Graduate School, and completed the executive development program at Carnegie Mellon University. He has published articles in navy journals and authored his first science fiction book, “Xetonian Trades,” in 2003. A second edition of the same book, “Xetonian Trades I, The Seeding”; “Xetonian Trades, The Augerite Hordes”; “Xetonian Trades III, The Reapers”; his first romance novel, “Ten Months,” and a short human interest story titled “Bus 22” were published in 2013. “Xetonian Trades IV, Infinity’s Gate” was published in 2014. This book is another story about how intelligent life in the Milky Way deals with love, war, and interplanetary intrigue. He and his spouse of forty-six years, Bernadette, have two sons, John and Matthew, and four grandchildren.
