About the Book

This book is a collection of poetry written throughout the journey of a youth caught up in the dark side that exists in our society. It is written from various times of her life and reflects each perspective. The addict, the stripper, the victim of domestic violence, these are just some of the views she writes from. During times when no one would listen to her spoken words or outcries, she wrote to cope, and this book was born. There are two parts to this book though. It is not all darkness. Somehow, miraculously, this young woman escaped the darkness and found the light. In the final section she reflects on lessons learned and coping mechanisms, as well as her hopes for a better society and a better world.

About the Author

Angel Power is a Canadian writer/poet with a unique perspective of social issues and a passion for exposing systemic injustices. Her powerful words are based on her own life experiences as well as her deep empathy and compassion for others who suffer. Acknowledged for her writing since a child, those who know her best will tell you, “This is her calling”. However, her life had a split path… there was a path filled with darkness, and a path full of light. She was misled and took the wrong path. Surrounded by darkness and consumed with the pain of broken bones, broken dreams, and a broken spirit, she saw no light in sight. However, against all odds, she survived and this is proof anyone can turn their life around. She has overcome addiction, and mental health issues like depression; she has survived domestic violence, the loss of what would have been her child, the sex trade, a major suicide attempt and more. Through words and poetry, creativity and determination, she has taken the pain of abuse, exploitation and addiction and found the strength and courage to share her story. As you read through “The Darkness & The Light”, her resilience and perseverance shines through. Now that she has survived the dark times, it has become her mission to expose and confront the issues plaguing today’s society through the power of the written word. It is also her hope to comfort, inspire and relate to those still lost in the darkness. Although she didn’t graduate high school or elementary school, in the midst of everything, she managed to graduate from college with Honours for Social Service Work. She is an active volunteer within her community and has a passion for activism, advocating for others and motivational speaking. She studies Buddhist philosophies and Native American teachings and continues to soul search, striving for self-actualization. Angel is currently editing her second book, the prequel to “The Darkness & The Light” titled “From a Caterpillar to a Butterfly: The Transformation from Victim to Victorious”.
