It was only a make-shift autopsy room. Though not elaborate nor modern, it was functional all the same. Windowless, with cinderblock walls and a concrete floor, the room was dominated by a stainless steel examination table in the middle, with a single tray of instruments to one side. Next to the instrument tray was an oversized sink. Attached to the water faucet was a garden hose with a large spray head. A storm drain, two by three feet, was the only break in the floor, and the steel table was tilted at forty-five degrees, with the bottom just inches from the drain. One had to be neat an autopsy is really a surgical procedure. In addition to the somewhat crude surroundings, there were a couple of peculiar features to this operation. On each of the four corners of the examination table, there were cast iron bars welded in place to the underside of the structure. Sam Mitchell, a semi-retired forensic psychiatrist is back again. Still nursing emotional and physical wounds from having been shot by a sociopathic fellow psychiatrist, he is having difficulty establishing normalcy in his life. To compound the current problems, it appears that his romantic relationship with Cathy Stewart is unraveling, after she moves to California. At the same time, his newfound friend, Jim Hodges, an investigator with the Martindale County Sheriff s Department, asks Sam to assist him with creating a psychological profile of an unknown serial killer, who is terrorizing the employees of nearby Astra Hospital. As the two men investigate the case, Sam unexpectedly finds new romance. At the same time, he unwillingly becomes involved in the killer s web.
About the Author
Jeffrey Smith is a native of Enterprise, Alabama. He is a psychiatrist in private practice, and also a professor in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Two Down, Two to Go is his second work of fiction, following on the heels of his first murder-mystery novel, Sudden Despair. Doctor Smith resides in Greenville, South Carolina along with his wife Anne and their two sons Andy and Ben.
