About the Book

In the Tobacco Patch is the story of Elmer Crummins. Elmer is an old Kentucky tobacco farmer. He is nearing sixty, and he is afraid he has missed the Dream. His one big concern though is that the government keeps cutting his tobacco allotment. Then he learns that his one son, Jim Henry, is dying of lung cancer caused by smoking cigarettes. Now Elmer's whole life is turned upside down. He turns things topsy turvy in the little county seat town of Scarrsville because he quit growing tobacco and everybody said he would "sure as God starve to death."

This book is dedicated to Porter Mayo, M.D. PhD, a native of Kentucky, who practised thoracic surgery in Lexington for thirty years, then became professor of surgery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center there. He is now writing a history of medicine and he has been helpful to the author of In the Tobacco Patch in defining the medical aspects of Jim Henry Crummins' case. Unknowingly, he sat for the pen portrait of Doctor Northcut in this story

About the Author

Henry Buchanan, the Georgia born teller of tall tales, has lived among Kentucky's tobacco farmers for more than a half century. He has learned of their labors, their frustrations and their tragedies. And he has seen the rebirth of hope in them when they have faced with courage and determination the issues of life and death.

In his tale of Elmer Crummins, Buchanan has drawn the word portrait of a simple ridge farmer who realizes his Dream in the fight for the life of his son, and of the grandchild yet to be born.

Buchanan lives in Calloway County, Kentucky, where the local farmers grow corn and beans and wheat and TOBACCO. At the fictional Sunrise Café, the author and his neighbors meet and argue over politics, religion and sex, and TOBACCO. Some of them have died now, but others live to continue the argument. Buchanan is the author of And the Goat Cried, The Marriage Myth, and The Televangelist. More of his tales are in the hopper at 1st Books.
