THE FIRE OF AGES
When the moon dwindles to a slender crescent,
Has the lunar cycle become senescent?
Will that opalescent silver light
Soon be swallowed by the void of night?
Even hurricanes that churn in southern skies,
Once over cold water soon wither and die.
It seems to me disturbingly strange
That even the most awesome mountain range
Can be inexorably eroded, grain by grain,
Until all that s left is a flattened plain.
The idea that earth s own home galaxy
Is infinite is mere fallacy.
Nothing glowing in the vastness of the Milky Way
Can burn forever and be there to stay.
And our own sun of molten gold
Shows the telltale signs of growing old.
If even the mightiest forces that rage
Can capitulate so completely to age,
There s no hope that humankind s strongest stance
Can stave off old age s deadly advance.
But before our eyes close in that last sleep,
There is one vow we may hope to keep,
And like the fiery sun end our own story
In a burst of brilliance, a blaze of glory.

About the Author
Kevin Lettieri, poet laureate of the highway, died unexpectedly on August 21, 1999, with his life still a work in progress. His most vital work his verses were finished by his oldest sister, Toni Verkruysse. Over a hundred of his posthumous poems poured down like scalding lava from the lips of a volcano. Kevin Lettieri s words were transcribed by his sister, who believes that poetry was her brother s secret language and his message from beyond this life.
