About the Book
In many youth organizations, such as local city and/or county youth bureaus, the youth coach receives very little training in the way of coaching, and most likely, little or no pay for his or her services. Because of this, it is very difficult for youth organization to require their coaching staff to complete mandatory training (in the way of college course work) in the areas of philosophy, methods, and first aid/CPR training. It must be mentioned that these items are very important ingredients in accomplishing the goals and objectives that are expected of a youth coach. This orientation and training manual will teach the coach how to develop policies pertaining to his or her program, and how to follow policy established by the sponsoring agency. He or she will learn ways to prevent problems that may involve the program participants, and/or parents. He or she will learn training skills in the areas of warm-up exercises, skills practice, and of course cool-down techniques. Other administrative skills will be covered such as developing an emergency action plan, knowing the appropriate agency chain of command or organizational chart, inspecting equipment before it is issued. The importance of obtaining and maintaining proper first and CPR certifications is covered and also the importance of having appropriate first aid supplies on hand at all times during practice sessions and contests. The subject of "legal liability" is covered. Coaches will learn how to improve their program by utilizing participant and staff evaluations. The youth coach will learn communication skills, and a philosophy of coaching is offered. Suggestions for practice sessions are made, and policy in regard to rules and regulations and the enforcement of same. The benefits of this type of manual are unlimited. It is a continuous reference manual that can be utilized by the coach at almost anytime.
