28-Sun-Bridgeport, Conn. Went to see Dick in New York, but he wasn’t home. I was so angry about it. I couldn’t imagine where he was. Visited Jean. She expects to go to the hospital Wed. Hope it’s a boy! 29-Mon-Bridgeport Dick wrote saying he had to work yesterday and he didn’t know where to get in touch with me to send a telegram. Today, Sue confessed to taking Joan’s things, the skunk. I finished my tablecloth. 30-Tues-Bridgeport Met a couple of fellows from Yale tonight. They were very nice and rather cute. Heard from Dick today. I wrote a fresh letter back to him. Am still mad about Sunday. 31-Wed-Bridgeport Went out but didn’t have a nice time. Think we’re going to have money troubles at the theater. Dick writes and says I had no reason to be angry because I didn’t tell him I was coming on Sun. Men are so stupid! NOVEMBER 1934 1-Thurs-Bridgeport Ray and I went out with the two fellows I met Tues. night. We went to New Haven with them. They are really the nicest boys I’ve been out with in ages. 2-Fri-Bridgeport Took some quinine and a hot lemonade for my chest cold at night. First time I haven’t been out this week and I’m glad of it. 3-Sat-Bridgeport The boys from New Haven sent a wire saying they will be in tonight. They are awfully sweet. Bought and sent Dick a nice shirt and tie for his birthday. 4-Sun-Worcester, Mass. Arrived here in time to make the eight o’clock mass. Went to sleep until six. Then, ate, washed, ironed and sewed until 3:00 A.M. Not a very exciting day. 5-Mon-Worcester Heard from Dick. I am kind of getting over my mad spell now. Sent him a pretty card for his birthday. Received our two weeks’ notice today. 6-Tues-Worcester Dick’s birthday. Didn’t hear from Dick today and can’t imagine why. Ray D came in tonight and took us for some spaghetti. Also, he gave Deb and me a fountain pen, which I’m writing with now. 7-Wed-Worcester The boys from New Haven came in to see Ray and me today. They had to leave early after the show tonight for which I’m thankful. 8-Thurs-Worcester Received a sweet letter from Dick today. I have quite forgiven him for that Sunday business. Bought two cute hats and a pair of shoes, which I needed quite badly. 9-Fri-Worcester Heard that Ray Paine was killed in an accident in Union City this week. I feel terrible about it. Always liked him a lot. May the Lord have mercy on his soul. 10-Sat-Worcester Harry, the stagehand, said when we come back again he’s going to give us his old car, or should I say "coffee grinder". How to get it home is the question, if we get it at all. 11-Sun-Union City, NJ Arrived here about 7:00 P.M. Saw Dick. He came over to see the show. Had dinner with him and then a disagreement. Billie got drunk and beat up Sue. She was fired. Aunt Margaret and Eva came in to see the show. 12-Mon-New York-Union City Instead of closing this week, we will work Philadelphia next week and close there. I imagine we’ll rehearse there for a new show. Hope so anyway. 13-Tues-New York-Union City This commuting isn’t so hot, but then it’s only one week so I don’t mind. Billie is still drinking. It’s a shame that she doesn’t stop. Hope things turn out OK for her. 14-Wed-New York-Union City Heard from Marion today. She didn’t get the letter I sent last week and was worried about Deb and me. Shall go home Sun. to visit her. Can hardly wait. 15-Thurs-New York-Union City Didn’t work so late tonight on account of the fights. Dick feels like quitting his job, which I think is very foolish of him. 16-Fri-New York-Union City My last day in New York. The week has gone by so quickly. Dick gave me the most beautiful card for my birthday. It made me feel so tender toward him.

About the Book
In 1980, Harry Schmoll, Jr., discovered his late mother’s secret diary. She had recorded daily entries in her little book during the 1930s, the time of the Great Depression. Much to his surprise, Harry learned for the first time that his mother had been a showgirl. Suddenly, he understood why she had such a great interest in show business and the movies. Also, the diary recorded the loves in the life of his mother, Margie Roth. Harry though this would make an interesting story. Also, since the diary portrays life during the Depression era, Harry decided to publish the diary as a book. All of Margie’s secrets are revealed in Asecon Diary of Margie Roth, 1933-37.
About the Author
Harry F. Schmoll, Jr. was born on January 20, 1939, at the Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, New Jersey, although his birth certificate lists his place of birth as Absecon. The first years of his life were spent in the "bungalow" in Absecon. Later the Schmolls bought a house in Pleasantville, New Jersey, where he resided until completing his high school and college education. He received his B.S. in business from Rider College (now Rider University) in 1960 and his Juris Doctor from Temple University School of Law in 1967. Since that time, he has practiced law, served as a crime commission director, held the position of Municipal Court Judge and taught at two universities and a community college. Currently he is a Professor at Burlington County College, Pemberton, New Jersey, where he teaches law courses. He is a member of the Bars of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. His professional biography is included in Who’s Who in America and several other Who’s Who publications. He is married to the former Rita Miescier. They reside in Mount Laurel, New Jersey.
