You've probably never thought of yourself as being in a war.
I certainly didn't. Long ago I paid my dues in one and when we'd finally blown it away, I figured it was all over Over There. Thank God.
If you're male, you've been raised on war. It's expected of you. Men fight, men win, whether you like it or not. If you're female, the idea of war repluses you even more. It means killing life. You're the bearer of life. You protect it instinctively, which is why you'd never dream of being in a war let alone being told that you'd better give it up if you want victory in your life.
The war you and I live in doesn't have any winners. It makes a few heroes, we think, but sooner or later they all troop off into the darkness. The war that you and I fight every day is in the battleground of your head, your emotions, your consciousness.
The walking wounded are the ones who didn't learn early enough how not to fight it. The killed in action are the ones who never stopped trying to beat it and win.
The war is in your business, your supermarket, your TV. It's in traffic, commuting, the price you pay for gasoline. It's in your voting, your kids soccer games, in the words you use, the thoughts you hold. It's in your body language, the look on your face. It's in your bank account and your marriage bed. It's even out on a slope skiing, or in a stream with a trout.
The war is your survival. It is being waged right now, this moment, in how you are being forced to live in the last hours of the most warlike of all centuries, the 20th.
You can go down fighting in defeat and die. Or, you can stop fighting, surrender and live. One thing is certain. The war won't go away. It can't. It's too deep in your heart for you to seek a separate peace.
The only way to declare an armistice is in your head. Time to stack the rifles and let the bugles blow no more.
You already know where true peace is. You just don't know you know it---yet.
If you go looking for it, you won't find it.
If you let go and let it find you, it will.
