Welcome to a journey through Biblical time, from Genesis to Revelation, as you enjoy some of my favorite recipes, which can be shared with your family and friends.
The foundational Scriptures for this book are found in the Book of Deuteronomy in the Bible. In Chapter 6, verse 5, the Scriptures tell us to 'love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.' In verses 24 and 25, the 'Lord our God has commanded us to obey all these laws and to fear him for our own prosperity and well being . . . For we are righteous when we obey all the commands the Lord our God has given us.' We are deemed righteous by God when we trust Him. We are to teach these laws to our children when we are home and when we are away from home, when we are lying down to rest, and when we are getting up. The stories in this book are wonderful examples of ordinary people who trusted God and were used greatly by Him to help the people He loves.
In this book you will enjoy once again some of those great stories and their spiritual truths. I have used the New Living Translation of the Bible for the direct quotes, which makes this a book that is easy, fun, and enjoyable to read, whether it's as a devotion after a meal, as a bedtime story, or at any time. I've selected titles for the recipes which will bring remembrance to the story connected with that title. This can be used as a great conversation opener and teaching tool for people of all ages. It would be fun to serve some of the appropriate recipes at a church or synagogue get-together, or a neighborhood outreach.
In this book I've tried to bring together two of my great passions -- the Bible and cooking. For me, manna is eating the Word daily by reading the Bible with an open heart and mind, just as I eat food every day to sustain my life.
This spiritual manna, the great truths and principles of the Bible, needs to be read and recounted to ourselves and our children to learn what God has done and will continue to do in miraculous acts for those who put their trust in Him and obey Him.
The recipes are healthful and low in fat. They can be prepared by adults and some can be prepared by children under the supervision of an adult. The counts for calories, fat, and sodium for each recipe were obtained from a variety of sources.
This cookbook evolved slowly. In January of 1997 I began to pray and ask God what He wanted me to do. Gradually the ideas came about for this book and the process of how to assemble it. This book is, and continues to be, a walk of faith, not of sight. It is my prayer that this cookbook with be an eternal blessing in your life.

About the Book
Manna From Heaven combines truths from classical Bible stories with delicious, healthy, low-fat recipes inspired by those stories. Many of the recipes have been developed over a period of twenty years. Following the chronological order of the Bible, foods from the fifty-two recipes (one for every week in the year) include such imaginative and delightful palate-pleasers as Garden of Eden Salad with Paradise Dressing, Spicy Lentil Soup similar to that for which Esau sold his birthright, King David's Beef Stew (fit for a king), Hearts of Palm Salad to celebrate Palm Sunday, a scrumptious Chocolate Cherry Torte to celebrate Jesus choosing His twelve apostles, and even a modern interpretation of manna itself.
Although inspired by ancient stories, these foods are up-to-the-minute in nutrition and health, and a tabulation of calories, fat, and sodium for each is included. Drawn from many countries, these foods help to illustrate the timeless teachings of God's Word.
About the Author
Debbie Busenkell has a degree in Home Economics from the California State University at Los Angeles, and has completed extensive graduate study in Biblical counseling. An avid and experienced cook and an active Christian, she has combined her flair for imaginative cuisine with her love of the Bible in this unique and fascinating book. Research into the cuisine of many countries has resulted in the wide variety of dishes in Manna From Heaven, each of which is linked to a Biblical episode.
Daily preparation of special food for a heart patient has given her practical experience in low-fat nutritional dishes, and every recipe in Manna From Heaven is suitable for modern low-risk diets.
'Like manna, food itself is a gift from God,' Debbie believes, 'and we should use it wisely and well.' She lives with her husband in the historic town of Temecula, California.
