At the clinic, tensions increased. There was no teamwork or job ethics to provide good service or to create good employee relationships. The nurses backstabbed the doctors, the doctors did the same to the nurses, and Marsha and Shirley at the front desk backstabbed everyone who came in contact with them. "Only Marsha and I have the key to the safe," Shirley told Alexandra, emphasizing each word. "The last time we gave the combination to the other Mexican who worked here before you, money was always missing." Alexandra bit her tongue, determined not to respond, but felt her blood boiling. Only because of need did she keep on going to work, but it was very difficult to understand how people without any training or finesse could be in charge. "I am sorry," Marsha and Shirley would invariably say to the poorest and most needy, "the doctors are very busy today. There is no way they can get to see you today without an appointment. The next available appointment won't be for a month." It was hard to listen without being able to say anything, disguising awareness with indifference. What they said to people were lies, but Marsha and Shirley seemed to enjoy seeing destitute people suffering, and the helpless look reflected in their astonished eyes when they were turned down. In no other place had Alexandra realized as strongly as in this clinic that the system worked only for the powerful and the rich, with only the crumbs left for the needy. The poor had no breaks; they were forced to remain cut off from opportunity. As for Alexandra, since she was Mexican, Marsha and Shirley had always treated her as a second-class human being with limited intelligence to understand how to file, how to match colors, or how to put pencils in the right place.

When Alexandra’s mother dies

she received during her childhood by her father play a major role in determining

It is composed every day, by acting on what is needed at any given moment for
survival.

the only strength she holds onto. With faith in God, she confronts and
transcends a gamut of unexpected tragedies: single motherhood, racism,
abortion, cultural prejudice, presupposed sex roles, abuse, discrimination,
unemployment and other vicissitudes.

She has a BA in Communications from the Westminster College and an AS in Marketing Management from the L.D.S. Business College. Noriega teaches ESL to foreign students, works for American Express, and lives in Salt Lake City with her son and daughter.
