A half hour after Jennie left, Jim came home. Upon approaching the house, he noticed that it was totally dark. He went upstairs and checked the girls' room. The two beds were both made. Maybe she decided to spend the night with her mother or sister. Alex and Tom were both in town. She probably wanted to spend more time with them. He wished he had a brother or sister.
He was on his way downstairs when something stopped him. What was it? Suddenly he remembered. It was the scent of perfume, very expensive perfume. He went into the bedroom they used to share. She was a very neat person, nothing was out of place. Why would she wear such expensive perfume to visit relatives? Maybe its the kids who are with relatives and she's with a lover. No, not Jennie; she's too self conscious about her weight.
He started to leave the room when he noticed something in the garbage can. It was the discarded wrapper for sheer, black, lace-top stockings. She always wore pantyhose. When did she change? He checked her drawers. There were garter belts, thong panties and very sexy underwear. Jennie never wore anything like that. Julie wore stuff like that but not Jennie. Now he was sure she was having an affair.
That b**ch, he could kill her. How could she do this to him. She knew Julie was just a diversion, something new and exciting. He would never break up his marriage for her. If Julie was stupid enough to believe that, what could he do? Jennie would never sleep with someone she didn't love. He knew he was the first, and he thought only man, she was intimate with. Should he try to win her back? There was so much to think about.
Women could be so treacherous, first Julie, now Jennie. Earlier as he pulled up to Julie's building, he saw her car racing out. Where in the world is she going? Just this morning they had made plans to meet around three o'clock. It was three ten. Should I follow her or wait? His curiosity won and he followed her. He had to drive fast to keep sight of her. She was already on the highway. She had to be doing eighty miles an hour. She was at least five cars ahead of him as he tried to keep up with her.
After a half hour, she moved to the right and exited. She drove up the hill, turned right two blocks and then .. Wait a minute. This was the way to Richard's new condo. Why would she be going there? Even though they worked for the same company, they didn't know each other. He had introduced Julie to Richard at a night club a few month ago. They never went anywhere else with him, but yet she knew the directions by heart. She didn't hesitate once on the way.
Julie parked in one of Richard's three spaces, right next to his car. Jim parked down the block and cautiously strolled toward the complex. It consisted of about fifty attached townhouses. Every house had three parking spots in front. She had reached the front door. How did she know where he lived? He started walking faster. Then he stopped and stared. It was just too hard to believe as he watched her reach in her pocket for the keys and then let herself in.
He went back to his car feeling betrayed. How could she do this to him? Richard was a dog, there was no question about that. He had seen him hit on his brother's girlfriend. But they were supposed to be friends. Why would Richard do this to him when he had his pick of so many other women? Jim was really hurt.
It was only one month ago that Richard had driven him to the complex. Jim was impressed. The bathroom with the full size Jacuzzi caught his eye. "This condo must have cost you a fortune."
"A man has to do what a man has to do."
"Does your wife know about this?"
"If she did it wouldn't be a hideaway, would it? Since you're my friend, I'm going to let you use it sometimes, in return for a small favor, of course."
"What kind of favor did you have in mind?"
"I might need a cover in case my wife gets suspicious. If I tell her I have to go out of town or something, just back me up. Whenever I'm not using the place, it's yours."
"That is a good deal. So, when can I use it?"
"Here's the key. Do me a favor, though. Let me know when you want to come by in case I have plans. I wouldn't want you to know all my secrets." Jim didn't realize it then but that had a double meaning.
"That's nice of you, Rich, and I can relate to that. We all have some secrets in our lives."
He couldn't get over how easy it was for Julie and Richard to fool him. It was embarrassing. Every time he thought about how he caused problems in his marriage for that whore, he got sick. Going home he decided to give Jennie a second chance. His parents were talking about taking the kids somewhere on vacation. This would give them time to work on their marriage. Little did he know that there was more disappointment waiting for him at home. He went back downstairs feeling sad and dejected. After a few glasses of gin and tonic, he began to feel better.
