Not Of This Fold

    Lameal was pleased with the questioning mind Darvo was exhibiting.  His training, though severe, was working.  And Jeku was devouring ancient books, his fine mind storing volumes of information.  One thing was disturbing, though.  When Darvo read, the genetic memory event was steadily being covered up, and the history he remembered was dull, lifeless.  This was the plan.  But Jeku's memory intensified; he seemed always poised on the edge of discovery.
    As each night was proclaimed, Lameal found himself sleepless, trying to discern the mystery of this Being without numbers, with no planetary past.  If it were not for the other discoveries he was making, he would have thought about Jeku constantly.  But Dr. Devree occupied much of his thought space.  He wa sure that in the strange flickering light on the vacant side of the planet he had seen something scurrying away from their view.  He knew that was impossible, for nothing could live there in the dark--unless--unless Devree had gone further than anyone knew with his experiments.  After all, there was water on that side of the planet; he had seen it on the canopy of the craft.  And if the light had been fire....  And they had seen the trees and growth in the zone just before the darkness.  That could provide food.  No.  No, it was too absurd, even for Devree to do.  It would be a scientific step backward to put these creatures there.  Anyway, they could not possibly be Beings who survive on the light.
