God’s Bouquet
The single most important person in my life was my Grandmother on my father’s side because she taught me so much. She lost her husband, my grandfather when I was about six years old but through her pain she taught me life goes on after a loss.
She turned to God after Grandpa’s death for comfort and I can still remember the first time going to church with her. Her church was very much different from the one’s I was used to going to. I’d always be taken to the Baptist church but I went with her to her Pentecostal church. Man, what a difference!
The preacher was exceptionally passionate in the way he gave his sermon and even at the young age of seven I didn’t color, draw or go to sleep as I always did in church. Why, I felt he was preaching right at me! The music was something akin to rock and roll of that time. Those people really got into their music!
But I guess what topped it all off was the prayer sessions. I was a bit afraid at first until I saw my Grandmother praying the same way. Hands raised to the ceiling, jumping up and down. Some were even "running and dancing in the spirit". She taught me to pray this way as well. She would read the Bible with me and just seemed to always believe in me no matter what I said or did. I just never felt like a "bad" child around her.
As I grew up and started finding my own way to God and how I wanted to worship Him, I’ve never forgotten those times with Grandma. And now that she has passed on I can still feel her near. I can still hear her praying, clapping her hands and I can see her smiling. It’s been over four years since her death but she is still very much a part of my life. I suppose she always will be. For you see, I remember once after my own Mother died, she once told me my Mom was a beautiful rose and that God wanted her in His bouquet in Heaven. So He picked her from down here on Earth to be in His bouquet and that she was with Him now.
So that is how I like to think of them now. As a couple of American Beauty roses up in God’s bouquet. And yet I feel so lucky to have tow great guardian angels watching over me during my days and nights here on Earth. My grandmother and mother, my guardian angels.

About the Author
Patricia Scroggins was born and raised in Southeastern Arkansas with two older brothers on a farm. She began writing as a child when her grandmother and aunt moved to Little Rock; the author missed them so much she began writing letters to them when she was six. Then Patricia discovered she could make up little songs and poems that she could give as gifts when she didn’t have any money to purchase a gift. She felt that was a way of giving a part of herself, which she felt was more important. The author lived in Oklahoma for about three years, in Tahlaquah, Cherokee Nation, and she learned a lot about the Indian ways and the spiritual side of herself. She considers herself to be a Spiritualist, and loves reading Mary Summer Rain’s books and Rita Mae Brown. Ms. Scroggins loves to collect anything about Elvis, Princess Diana, and Jackie Kennedy. They are her role models, so to speak. She grew up on old time rock and roll music and loves to listen to the oldies. Patricia lives with her two dogs, Jack and Teddy, her horse Misty and her companion Sandy. She helps her older brother raise catfish. Patricia is interested in starting to write short stories. She wishes to continue to write as long as she lives.
