About the Book

Gobblers I Have Known . . . is a turkey hunting book for turkey hunters by a self-proclaimed turkey hunting fanatic. Go along with the author on hunts across the nation for the four subspecies that make up the Grand Slam and experience the excitement, frustration, intensity, and humor that make the great sport of spring turkey hunting special to all who participate. Hopefully you will better recognize the deep emotions that turkey hunting lends itself to, but above all you will be entertained by Herald’s straight forward "tell it like it is" style of writing about a subject that obviously means very much to him.

Most turkey hunting books are "how to" manuals geared toward newcomers to the sport. This book is different. It is primarily for the readers’ entertainment and is an enjoyable compilation of hunting stories and editorials. The book chronicles the evolution that has taken place in the author’s life concerning the pursuit of the most regal of game birds, the wild turkey. For Herald, wild turkeys and their hunting went from something he only read about in a few magazine articles, to a passion that leads him afield 30-40 days each spring in as many states as he can possibly squeeze into his schedule.

The book takes readers along on hunts spanning many years, chasing gobblers from south Florida, to northern Michigan, to South Dakota, to central Texas, and many places in between. Herald shares his outdoor experiences, both good and bad, and introduces many of the wonderful people with whom he has had the great fortune to share a turkey camp. He voices his opinions, however, right or wrong you may find them, on tactics, guides, biology, ethics, and the mindset of turkey hunters, but above all, his appreciation and passion for America’s greatest game bird shines through.
