Lance lay crumpled under a heavy green blanket, shivering and burning up with fever. His breathing was fast and loud, and the awful cough had gotten worse. Each time Lance coughed his body jerked and pulled. Right away, Rad knew Lance was barely alive and in deep trouble. Aside from the terrible breathing and coughing, Lance could have easily passed for a dead person. The color had drained from his face until his skin tone was chalky gray. Rad knelt beside Lance and instantly began trying to wake him up. "Come on Lance! Wake up!" Rad said loudly and brushed hair away from his face. "You’re sick and need doctor! But you’ll hafta wake up and help me because I can’t get you down the mountain by myself." There was only one thing to do. Rad had to call his dad. Although Dad would be upset since Rad had slipped off again, Rad knew Dad would not hesitate to help. "I'll explain everything after we get him to the hospital," Rad said over the cell phone. He glanced outside at the creature. How do I get it across to you, that I am here to help? Rad wished for his brother. Ty was excellent with animals and would know exactly what to do. "Dad," Rad said. "I have to hang up and call Ty. He’ll know how to handle this wolf. I’ll get you back on the line in a few minutes." "Oh wow!" Ty exclaimed. "What you hafta do is treat him as you would Destroyer." "Ty, Destroyer is your German Shepherd. This Animal is a wolf!" "I know that. I was gonna say that you’d have to watch him closer. Don’t you dare move fast. Wolves are wild, but some love human companionship. Do the turtle walk, you know very slowly. I don’t know how true this is, but I read where they like the sound of music." "Ty I don’t have a radio or anything else to play this monster music." "Sing to him." "Sing to him! You are outta your mind!" "Remember when we were little and Mom sang to us? Her voice was soft and low. Remember how it always put us to sleep?" "Ty, we’re humans, this is an animal." "Hey you asked for my advice and I’m telling you that’s how you should treat this wolf. Get the tune of Rock-a-by-baby in your head and keep it, even when you’re talking to him. Soft and gentle." "You honestly think that’ll help." "I don’t know, but it sounds good, and if it works, we’ll market the idea."

A few days before Thanksgiving, eleven-year old Rad Sergeant found Lance Corby, a boy about his own age, living in the Peak Mountains behind his ranch. The boys connected immediately, talking for hours, revealing their most private thoughts. Lance boasted about huffing and breathing inhalants; although Rad loathed Lance’s dreadful habit and told him so, he felt pity for a kid living alone in the mountains. Then one day while checking on Lance, Rad found him passed out and immediately called his Dad for help. The doctor said Lance had pneumonia without much hope of pulling through since he had inhaled chemicals for years. Five days later and very much to the doctor’s surprise, Lance woke up and was able to speak, but slipped away from the hospital without anyone knowing and headed back to the mountains. Even though the weather was dreadfully cold, Rad set out to find and bring Lance home with him. Then again, two very angry, hungry wolves had other ideas and the boys found themselves fighting for their lives. Kindred Spirits is a colorful, spirit filled addition to the Rad Sergeant western adventure series for the young reader.

Jean Robinson Westcott was born and raised in rural Arkansas, but moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma when she met and married Waymon Westcott. Jean is a grandmother who enjoys life with words. As a child, she was always scribbling something on paper or making stories come alive in her head.
