About the Book

Mozambique Mystique shares for the first time, a little known tale of a young American plunged into the world of espionage, intrigue and hunted by the Nazi's as he tries to accomplish his mission.  The story takes the reader from Washington, D.C. to Brazil; across north Africa to Cairo, Egypt culminating in Lourenco Marques, Portuguese East Africa.

The great war stories of D Day and Omaha Beach have been told and retold. As the stories about escapades of World War II slowly shrivel, joining their authors in the grave, Gone forever will be untold tales of bravery, espionage and adventure.

A new story has emerged, a little known mission at that, but one of great importance to our nation. Had the war continued for another year, this mission could have made the difference between winning and losing.

The Japanese gained control of the world's hemp supply and the U.S. hemp reserves began to dwindle due to the excessive number of merchant ships being sunk by German submarines. It put us at risk of survival without hemp to create the necessary dock lines to tie up our ships unloading munitions, personnel and supplies.

The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) combined with the Office of Naval Intelligence received the government's top priority assignment to acquire sisal as an alternative to hemp. A large plantation in Mozambique, Portuguese East Africa was the destination for what would become quite a dangerous adventure.

The story within Mozambique Mystique is not fabricated, the adventures are real, I lived them. At the young age of 83, I intended Mozambique Mystique to be a memoir for my grandchildren, but what emerged instead was a book to be read by all.

About the Author

George Morales was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City.  While a senior at Columbia College in New York City, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the office of Naval Intelligence and subsequently to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II.  He served in the Navy for over 20 years.  He married a Navy WAVE and had 3 children one of whom recently retired as a Navy Captain.  After his wife of 53 years died his daughter suggested he write a short story of his experience in Naval Intelligence and the OSS.  He did and she thought the story was too good to be left untold and suggested he write a book.

This is a true story with a few embellishments and told from memory so the dates may not be exact, but the facts remain. It happened to me.
