"Jon?" She sat up, searching his eyes. "What troubles you, beautiful man? Is it me?" He nodded slowly, the corners of his mouth beginning to smile. "It’s you, Sabbath child. Always you. The rest of my life is like sailing on a glassy sea. But you," he cradled her face in his hands, speaking softly, lovingly, as if he spoke endearments. "You’re a storm brewing. Wind and waves, rain and hail," every other word was punctuated with a kiss, "thunder and lightning, knocking me off my feet." "Maybe you need be knocked off your feet." He lay his cheek against hers, preventing her from looking into his eyes. If he was to be struck by that thought, he had to hide it. Witch that she was, she would know. "Maybe." His nose rubbed her cheek. "You’ve a choice you know, Jon. Don’t let that storm knock you down or let me help you up." "Is there something in the world I wouldn’t let you do?" "I can think of a few things." "I can think of only one, Nik." She watched his eyes as he whispered to her, "I won’t let you leave me. You’re my little girl, my best friend, my guardian angel, my miracle. It is to me you were sent. My life belongs to you. Promise me, Nik, you won’t leave me." Her eyelids lowered, she was thinking. "I promise I won’t leave as long as you’re happier with me than you’d be without me. As long as I can give you almost as much as I take from you. As long as being with you is good for you. As long as there are stars in the sky and your eyes are blue." "Then I promise I’ll be here for you, Nik, without condition, as long as always." "You must like sailing in storms, Jon." Now she was rubbing her nose against his cheek. "Anyone can sail a glassy sea, Nik, but a storm...," "...requires a miracle man." He loved and hated the way he felt with her face against his. "Nik, if you don’t intend to kiss a man, you need keep your lips away from his because this will make him crazy." She straightened, "That’s what a man gets for sailing in a storm."

About the Author
Carol Bluni was born in Brooklyn, New York, during World War II. She has four children, four grandchildren, and a master’s degree in education. Besides playing piano and singing with her church choir, she has happily been an elementary school teacher on Long Island for almost twenty-five years. As a child she had three dreams for her life, to be a mother, a teacher and a writer – all of which she has now achieved. Her book, Beyond Ambergris, was begun more than twenty years ago when she decided to write the story that had been on her mind. However, with a divorce and change in residence, the story was packed in a box where it sat for seventeen years. One Ash Wednesday, in search of a Lenten sacrifice, she chose cleaning storage boxes over her usual candy fast, and discovered her incomplete manuscript. She decided to finish it, which proved hardly a sacrifice. It was such a joy, she was sorry to see it finally completed.
