"That's impossible--" the old navy man stammered, while his face paled. "Why is it impossible? Commander Alderman?" Thumper had time to reorganize his thoughts before speaking. His manner became increasingly rude and cold while the old eyes blinked irregularly. All sure signs he was under pressure. "It's impossible, no boat lost fifty years ago could still be intact." The old gentleman leaned heavily upon his cane. "Commander Alderman, U-2045, while apparently experiencing internal problems, rammed into an underwater ice formation. That powerful impact kept the boat imprisoned for fifty-four years, until recent thawing released the sub, which then surfaced. One of our ships, seeing it, gave the alarm." He allowed this information to sink into the startled professor’s mind. "The boat was boarded. It was like an ice cube with everything and everybody aboard frozen solid." While he narrated their classified facts, Rochelle carefully watched the old man's face for betrayal to what he was struggling to keep secret. He was definitely lying. "We were able to obtain the sub's operational log and captain's war diary." At this point, Charlie stopped talking to look at Rochelle. Rochelle reaching into her purse removed the battered war diary and handed it to the old man. Commander Alderman instantly groaned his disbelief upon seeing the sub's name still readable across its moldy leather cover. "This official document written by Captain Saller, German Navy, writes they were to rendezvous with American destroyer U.S.S. BOBBY BLAKE, on or about, May 7, 1945. If the rendezvous wasn’t kept, the submarine was to sail into the Scotia Sea. It’s all written in there by the German captain. So again, Commander Alderman, my question; what was BLAKE doing meeting an enemy submarine? What was your purpose in doing so? And was BLAKE's sinking due in part to this meeting?" Thumper handled the old book, the size of a woman's diary, as if it was stained with blood. His surprise, foolishly not suppressed, was slow in fading. Rochelle curiously noted the old man seemed to age considerably while she watched. He sighed heavily, trying to exhale his deep fears of what this disclosure would develop into. Leaning on his cane for a moment, those weak eyes stared at Charlie with increasing hatred. "What was your function aboard the BLAKE?" Charlie sternly requested of the man, who by this time had pushed himself back against the chair's cushions. "Communications." "Officer-in-charge of communications would know what messages came aboard, would they not?" "Normally-yes. But all incoming messages concerning that submarine were in code. Only our captain had the German decoding manual and it remained locked in his cabin's safe." He became silent for a few minutes, then started talking awkwardly. "Part of our mission was refueling the sub's fuel bunkers from our own. While this was going on, our captain crossed over and spoke with the Nazi skipper. I don't know what was said. During the refueling a crate was swung over to the sub. What that metal crate contained-I do not know."

About the Author
Herman Lloyd Bruebaker served ten years in the United States Navy as a journalist. From 1957 – 1967, he served aboard warships and Far East shore duties. These assignments would later provide backgrounds for his novels. Herman lives in Riverside, California with his wife and sons
