Bow had to dive down to see if their throw lines were still there. He hooked a rope to his waist and the other end to a tree. He unhooked the lines but there wasn’t any fish on them. They left without breakfast that morning. They still had some food in the canoe. They would stop and picked blackberries now and then.
They made good time in the fast water and at one time they found themselves boating through someone’s back yard. They stopped to talk to some people, but didn’t stay long. They did ask if they could pick some apples from their apple trees that were out in the water. The people said that they could have all they wanted.
Nub picked about ten apples as Bow held the canoe with another rope hooked around another tree. Nub thanked the people as they left.
They ate apples all day and didn’t stop to cook. Bow had picked a few apples also and they had enough food for several days if you like apples for breakfast lunch and dinner. The days were moving along a little faster and so was the time. They saw much of the river and occasionally they would walk into a town to mail a card back home. The flood water went down and they had to
oar more now.
Once they stopped just to fish all day. They were setting on a dock that was at near a town. They got to talk to a couple of people that lived there. The lady said, "Hello."
Nub said, "Hi."
The man said, "I don’t think that I have ever saw you boys around here before."
Bow said, "We built the canoe and are on a trip down river."
The Lady said, "Where are you going."
Bow said, "New Orleans."
The man said, "That is a fur piece."
The Lady asked, "Where did you start from."
Nub said, "We live just south of Clayton Ohio."
The Lady said, "Oh my lands, that is almost eight hundred miles away. I never heard of Clayton, but I do know where Ohio is."
Then the Lady said, "How are you eating?"
Bow said, "We fish and mom fixed us some supplies to start with."
The lady said, "My name is Laoni and if you will come up the house I will fix you a good meal."
Bow said, "We wouldn’t want to put you out."
Nub said, "Sounds good to me."
As she pointed, Laoni said, "Then it is settled, come right over to that house there."
The man said, "My name is Clevis McCabe. Your boat will be all right here. I will have a friend watch it for you."
As they walked to the house the lady said, "How long has it been since you had a bath?"
Nub said, "We have one almost every day in the river. Once the canoe turned over and we almost lost everything in it. We were lucky that the water wasn’t deep and we got everything back, Mom put a lot of things in water tight jars."
Laoni said, "No I don’t mean in the river, I mean a good old fashion bath with soap and water."
Bow said, "Just before we left home."
Laoni said, "We will fix you a good hot pan of water and you may wash in the summer Kitchen. No one will bother you. I will lend you some clothes and I will wash your’s. Then we will have a good old down on the farm dinner."
Nub said, "That sounds fine to me."
After the boys washed up and Mr. McCabe lent them a change of clothes that he had in the house, they had dinner. Bow gave Grace. They ate with manners but still ate allot. It was good. Laoni said, "Eat up, there is more after that if you can hold it."
Mr. McCabe said, "Boys you might as well stay the night because it is getting dark."
Laoni said, "Yes we have an extra bed room and you can get a good nights sleep."
Mr. McCabe said, "We will go down and get your things after dinner and the canoe will be all right where it is."
Bow said, "Thank you, I think that would be enjoyable."
After dinner Mr. McCabe and the boys went down to the dock to get their supplies. When they got back, Laoni had the boys clothes washed and hanging on the clothes’ line. She said, "The clothes will be dry in the morning."
Laoni took then to a pleasant room on the east side of the house. The bed was made up like their mother would have done back on the farm. The boys got a good night sleep that night.
The next morning the sun came into Nub and Bow’s bedroom window early. The boys were in a delightful soft bed, it felt so good that they didn’t want to get up. " knock came on the door and Mr. McCabe said, "It is Breakfast time."
Bow was still tired. Bow said to Nub, ""ct like you are still a sleep."
Nub said, "We are coming."
Mr. McCabe said, "Open the door and I will give you your clothes that Laoni washed for you."
Nub open the door and took the clothes and after the boys dressed they went to breakfast. Laoni said, "I wasn’t trying to ease drop, but I heard you boys say your prayers last night. "t dinner last night Bow gave Grace. I think that your folks raised you right. Today is Sunday and we are going to church If you boys would like to go with us it would make us happy."
Bow said, "We don’t want to over stay our welcome. We have lost time of the days and weeks. "t one place on the river we did hear church bells. Mom never did want us to miss church. Mom told us if we had the chance to go to church, to go. We need to get on our way but we would be happy to go to church just the same."
Mr. McCabe said, "It is settled then, we will all go."
The church was a little walk down the road. Some of this area looked like home all for the funny looking moss hanging on the trees. "s they came up to an old church building, they went inside. " lot of people looked at them as they went in. Mr. McCabe told the preacher about their visitors. The preacher welcomed them and told the congregation about the boys.
"After Sunday school they stayed for church. Everyone wanted to talk to the boys and hear about their adventure. Nub and Bow talked to them but felt a little bit uncomfortable. "After they went back to the McCabe’s home, Laoni fed them again. Mr. McCabe, Nub and Bow loaded up their boat again. By this time it was afternoon and the boys were burning day light.
When they looked back up the hill, they saw many people coming down toward them. It was some people from the church with the preacher in front. The preacher said, "Our congre
