In our international civilization and multicultural communities, we need a common set of values—a transnational story (instead of our exclusive nationalistic and ethnocentric ones) containing the historical foundation for our shared beliefs in order to protect our basic human rights (an unoffi cial international constitution, or the Magna Carta for the world); we need a transnational story with a social, or moral, ideal that best exemplifi es equality and justice before violent and aggressive crimes against humanity can cease and before nations can live in peace. this book off ers the Bible as that transnational story and resource for a common standard if read from a purely historical viewpoint—that is, if read on a humanitarian (moral) level in order to benefi t all diff erent types
of cultures, religions, beliefs, and governments. My humanitarian premise is this: since man is capable of great evil, we must be united in our resolve to insure the principles that “all men are created equal” and that all men
have the rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” whether they be Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, Shinto, or even atheist, an industrialized capitalist nation or a developing socialist
nation. (And, unequivocally, the Bible is the fi rst and best resource for that purpose.) Nothing short of this should be tolerated. Th is is the manifesto of the people of the world, our inalienable rights as given to us by God as
his special creation.
Since the Bible is the oldest historical document of man and of our ancestral origins (our common cultural heritage), being over thirty-fi ve hundred years old, and the only history book (story of man) ever written in the Ancient world before the Classical Age beginning with the Greeks in the 5th century B.C.E., it is ground zero (the beginning writing point, or thought process) for almost every major concern, or developing institution, of man, from animal biology and banking to prostitution and politics. It documents real people, places, and events, their thoughts
on love and war, law and government, right and wrong, rich and poor, citizen and foreigner, men and women, and joy and suff ering. And more importantly, the ideals and models in this book are still the best in all the
world thousands of years later, although we have had much more time to evaluate life than Ancient man did. So advanced are its ideals and laws that the
