It wasn’t like I woke up one morning to find my life suddenly different. There had been signs. No, she didn’t suddenly become ill, not suddenly a different person. But with one early morning phone call, my worst fears were realized--the fear that my strong, confident mother wasn’t infallible and immortal! June 28,1996 Since accepting the Alzheimer’s diagnosis, I am gaining some new insights regarding my church. In the past, I have been told that different friends were disappointed because of church friends concerns when they were ill. "Why don’t they care?" I thank you Lord, that you have drawn my personal attention to this same problem. I am understanding this better now that I am experiencing the same type of thing. There are bits of time that I wonder if Alzheimer’s is like leprosy. Will people always be afraid of a person who is ill? In reality this is not contagious or harmful to others. I’ve always known that experience is the best teacher. But now the problem arises- Will I be able to express such a need to my pastor? I do not want to cause problems but I am now keenly aware of the telephone that hangs on the wall or sits on the desk or table that remains silent, day in and day out. Except for calls from my family or close friends. To hear the phone ring, to answer and be rewarded with the sincere expression such as, "How are you today?" would be so welcome. I am so grateful that I learned early in life to love people and show some concern for another persons’ needs. I confess my greatest fear of Alzheimer’s is that it will cause me to lose my closeness to God. Today the disturbing thoughts hovering around me regard my ability to remember. I do not want to lose my ability to pray and talk to God. It is different praying so much for my own concerns. Why do I feel so selfish praying for myself? I do believe my thoughts are being affected by the knowledge that my memory is fading. I do not want to lose the security of your loving care and possibly not knowing enough to abide in your love, Lord. Alzheimer Disease is a debilitating, vicious disease that creates havoc in its’ victims mind. The disease not only affects the patient but the family and friends of the patient. It does, in fact, change the lives of all those involved. At times, I wondered if I was strong enough to walk this path with our beloved mother.

A Little Thing Called Love is a beautiful love story, love of God, love of a wife and her husband, and a daughter’s love for her mother. Alone in her home, Betty paced around and around the large oak dining table that had been her parents. "Why me?" she questioned over and over until finally the answer came. "What makes me so special that I can’t be inflicted with Alzheimer’s disease?" She had always believed that everything that happens has a purpose. What good could possibly come out of having Alzheimer Disease? Betty would use her talents for writing and mentoring others to tell what it was like to be an Alzheimer victim. In Rebecca’s endeavor to fulfill her promise to complete Betty’s work, it became obvious that her story as Betty’s caregiver needed to be included. A Little Thing Called Love is an inspirational, heartfelt story of a daughter and her mothers’ journey through Alzheimer disease.
About the Author
Rebecca Elizabeth Lowther Clark was born in Iowa in 1949. She was raised in a large, closet-knit, Christian family. Today, Rebecca lives with her husband on a hobby farm near Willmar, Minnesota. In addition to being a wife and mother, she continues to volunteer and devote her time to the elderly. Her life’s journey has presented many challenging adventures. Rebecca has chosen to learn and gain strength despite overwhelming adversity. She is confident that everything has happened for a greater purpose. Clarks gentle humor, sensitivity, and love for her mother comes alive in this wonderful book.
