About the Book

Here is a heartwarming, poignant, and altogether absorbing novel. Full of human interest with meticulously delineated characters, Flight of the Kroughs chronicles the story of one family's heroic battles to overcome poverty, prejudice, religious bigotry and a hostile environment to progress in a highly competitive world.

Spanning two generations, this gracefully written volume transports the reader to a simpler time, an era when values were easily discernible and when modest pleasures promised fulfillment.

The story centers on Irene Coburn, an independent and strong-willed woman of southern pioneer stock, and Iver Krough, a proud, temperamental and intensely individualistic Mormon from Utah. Literally swept off her feet by the handsome Iver's dashing ways, Irene soon agrees to become Mrs. Krough. Early in their marriage, trouble begins, and what starts out as a comfortable life for the couple comes to an abrupt halt when Iver decides to move halfway across the country-then on to Utah-in search of a better life, with Iver finding whatever jobs he can along the way. To make matters worse, Irene gives birth to one child after another, until finally she becomes the mother of thirteen children growing up in a depressed economy barely able to sustain itself – where the only certainties are massive unemployment and rampant poverty.

Flight of the Kroughs is a powerful and moving story of love and courage. Author D. Raymond Anderson's smoothly flowing narrative contains all the elements that make up a finely woven tale–suspense, adventure, tragedy, humor and ample doses of romance. These ingredients are deftly intermingled here to produce an unforgettable work that will appeal even to the most discriminating reader. But what is particularly noteworthy about this exhilarating story is the vitality of the people it depicts and how without sermonizing, the author underscores American society's need for a reawakened family closeness, along with the virtues associated with self-reliance.

Highly recommended for its slice-of-life observations of people and events of a significant era, the reader is given a glimpse of an important part of America's past he will not soon forget. Moreover, the pleasant conversational tone with which the reader is made immediately comfortable makes these nostalgic recollections rewarding and inspiring reading.

Flight of the Kroughs brings to life two unforgettable and courageous individuals whose endeavors helped lay the foundations of America's greatness.
