About the Author
Lane is proud to be a Canadian. He was a schoolteacher with the passion of bringing his classroom alive with the excitement of learning. Through story telling, poetry, science experiments and projects he strove to get his student’s attention and make their eyes open wide with excitement and wonder. To do this he always researched deeply into science and history two subjects that are his delight. He would then present the unusual and little known stories from the past.
A theme that always ran though his lessons was that to do something great you have to ‘dream’. He would tell them that only by dreaming and working with dedication and determination could you make your dreams come true. There were so many examples historically and scientifically. He would tell them about people like: Terry Fox, Janis Babson, Frederick Banting nationally and the likes of Ghandi, Marie Curie and Martin Luther King internationally. There were also notable events like the Klondike Gold Rush, Halifax Explosion or space exploration and the atomic bomb.
Science was a great way to motivate young minds. They loved to peer into microscopes like Anton van Leeuwenhoek the ‘father of microbiology’ Artistic in his own right he encouraged them to draw what they saw and observed. Imagine the delight in the classroom when students saw the actual birth of some microorganisms.
Writing and studying poetry was one thing he found students enjoyed. He would introduce them to William Blake’s powerful ‘The Tiger’ and William Drummond’s ‘Little Bateese’. Pauline Johnson’s ‘Songs My Paddle Sings’ was excellent for it wove nicely into early exploration of
Lane has written this collection of poetry over many years. Some of them are whimsical like The Tree and Raindrop. Some are epic like Yonder Hudson Bay and Christmas 1792. Others are disturbing like Boo Hoo Were at Columbine, Kayla Rolland and Abused Woman. Then there is the deep and thought provoking like One Constant in Life and My Will to You.
The love poetry contained in this book is to no one person but to those that Lane has loved over the years. They are all special is some way. Some are light and full of love. Some are dripped in the tears of love lost like Butterfly Free Not to Be. Lane is especially proud of the poem Fire! Lover! that you will immediately recognize as a take on Blake’s wonderfully powerful poem but with a goddess as its focus instead of a tiger.
Lane is sad that he is no longer welcome in the classroom because of administrative bungling and discrimination. Unfortunately it is the young minds of the future that are losing a mentor who truly cared about their dreams and their future. It is out of his hands now but he hopes that this collection of poetry will perhaps make you dream and say “Why not!”
This collection has been honed, read and reread to get the rhythm as smooth as silk. The rhymes have a lilt that caresses the ear with a song of hope, courage and love. Most importantly he says read them aloud for that is how this book can truly be enjoyed with those you love enough to share with.
