It was his habit each day to leave the office, go home, relax over a scotch while reading the newspaper, which was the only time he got to read it, with the television on, usually on a station that didn’t mount to a hill of beans. It was for noise purpose mostly. He usually ordered out and picked it up on his way home. Harlan lived alone no cat or dog, which John repeatedly said he needed, that and a girlfriend.
Tonight Harlan’s routine was to be different. He had forgone the newspaper and television. Instead he ate his Chinese take out, showered, fixed a scotch and climbed into bed, but not alone.
He had brought Bethe’s files home along with the taped sessions. The rest of the apartment was asleep except for his oriental style bedroom.
Pillows propped his back, the bedside lamp illuminated his side of the bed. Beth’s voice came out of the portable player like she was in the room. Harlan read what other doctors had written about her in their sessions, which was always the same, didn’t talk and doesn’t remember anything.
It disturbed him how much influence Robert Haulsey had. How he gave Beth no choice but to give up a baby, which Harlan could see Beth wanted to keep. How some of Beth’s records were either missing or blacken out with a black marker, which he knew was illegal.
As Harlan tried to understand what he was reading, he couldn’t help but to wonder if Robert Haulsey could have had anything to do with Beth’s mother leaving and not coming back. If Haulsey did, what role did he play to make Anne Margaret run like she did?
He knew what he was going to have to do to help Beth and to find answers to his questions. That was dig around.

About the Book

About the Author
Carla Landreth is an accomplished author, who has written several award winning short stories and poems that have been published in anthologies. A Texas native, born September 19, 1969, Landreth is the oldest of four, is married and has three children. Landtreth is highly involved in charities and organizations and remains an active member of the Woman’s Division Chamber of Commerce. In additions to her writing and charities, she bides her time with her family and friends, renovating the family’s old farmhouse and collecting antiques. A Politician’s Sin is Landreth’s second novel the first being A Dark Night In Texas.
