The Apothecary of Incurable Madness
The feast of battles fought feeds the armies
Hunger for conquest.
The famine lays fortress strong
War weary discipline weak
A woman can find another
Lover
And it is a righteous military maneuver.
A man can fuck someone else
And it is the declaration of ‘HOW COULD YOU’
Now woman are funny that way
But not men.
Men eat everything laid
On the plate before them:
Women, with the same salacious appetite
Do the opposite.
They ignore the privations of penis drudgery
And salute
The solidarity of virginal sobriety
The fortress stands suggesting another go at it
The gates are opened only to the flag
Of the Vicar host to surrender.
The General of this war,
Not unlike a pharmacist tasked with prescription
To an incurable madness,
Must weigh the good and the evil,
Comparable with the penis and the vagina,
The right and the wrong
The good and the bad
The his and the hers
With the
Right to suffer repose and a lack of dignity
Privately, publicly
Or
The honor of awarding
Medal morphine
To the woman’s side in me
Warring
Present tense or
What if: God forbid,
Posthumously:
I’d rather be dead
Than gay.
Or maybe, if things worked out Okay;
Gay
And not quite dead.

About the Author
Steven G. Deaton was born in California on Veterans Day, 1950. He received his Bachelors Degree in Political Science from California State University, Chico, 1981. His professional career has spanned from police work where he served as an Officer with the City of Ashland, Oregon, Police Department and was a member of the Special Emergency Reaction Team with the Portland Police Bureau to 22 years as a United States Army Aviator. While with the U.S. Army, and the Oregon Army National Guard, Steve has flown combat missions as an aircraft commander in the Republic of Vietnam, served in the Korean Cold War as a combat surveillance pilot, and voluntarily served as an aircraft commander flying a utility cargo airplane in Operation Desert Storm. Currently, Steve serves as a Captain for an east coast based airline, and lives in Portland, Oregon.
