About the Book

Historical, romantic saga of Boer trek.  Impoverished young Englishman, Jan, falls in love with beautiful Boer girl, Ariel, on ship to Cape Town, South Africa.  Her strict Calvinist father, de Coligny, of royal lineage, is trekking Boers across the Transvaal, fleeing British persecution.  Jan, to be with Ariel, drives ox-wagon over Stormberg Mountains, battles hostile Zulus.  To win over Ariel’s father, Jan makes his fortune in diamonds at Kimberley, facing down powerful enemies.  He returns to elope with Ariel, settling as Boer farmer.  When his diamond fortune is stolen by his brother, Jan finds gold in Rand.  Years pass.  Jan and Ariel raise son and daughter.  Boer war breaks out.  Father and son fight together against British.  Their farm destroyed.  Son, Aram, saves gorgeous Vevreen, a British hostage, foretelling next generation’s romance.  Ariel rescued from cruel British internment camp.  Their enemies vanquished, peace declared, Jan leads last trek to Kalahari.

 


About the Author

Clarence M. Agress, retired cardiologist, published author of fiction and non-fiction.  Agress’ star-studded practice included: William Randolph Hearst, Peter Sellers, Milton Berle, Red Skelton, Ann Baxter, James Mason, Phil Silvers, Cornel Wilde, Barbara Bel Geddes, Billy Wilder, George C. Scott, the Lone Ranger, the Cisco Kid, many more.  Owned a yacht with Walter Matthau.  Harvard graduate, famous for co-discovering first blood test for heart attacks and heart monitor for Neil Armstrong’s moon walk, Agress received White House commendation.  Authored over 100 scientific articles, Agress also wrote pioneer exercise book, Energetics.  Novels are Spring Rain and The Voortrekkers.  Retirement includes writing, painting, Mandarin, golf, daughters, Carol and Edith, and four outstanding grandchildren.  Agress now lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Joan.
