"SAM'S FIGHT FOR JUSTICE"
The year was 2001and Sam had just turned Thirteenth that December Sam is what you would call
all boy he liked to play back yard sports and didn't mind at all about getting dirty sometimes real
dirty, he could wear out a pair of shoes in a month just from dragging his feet behind him while
riding his bike, Sam would always try to explain to his father and me how his feet would help him
get control of his bike and bring it to a complete stop but it never did work we knew he loved to
do burnouts and skids so we would yell at him for dragging his feet and ruining his shoes.
Sam was constantly having to tear his bike apart and fix his brakes of course he would always
explain how they froze up on him or how they somehow become jammed Sam loved attention
and could always manage to draw a crowd the neighborhood boys usually would gather around
him just to listen to Sam's miracle jump that he had just preformed somewhere around the
neighborhood and of course it was the jump of all jumps and someone somewhere had seen it
and could back up his story like I said Sam was definitely all boy.
Sam had always been able to make friends very easy it seemed like other boys were always
attracted to his easy manner and the fact that he loved to play and joke around, Sam would rather
get someone to laugh at him instead of always looking around and finding a reason to start a fight
even Sam's teachers would sometimes laugh at his joyful and easy ways.
I was so glad to finally see Sam coming out of his shell that he had built around himself the past
year there had been quite a few major events that had happen to Sam and our family the past year
before we had even moved to that small town that had affected everyone's life, Sam had changed
the most in a lot of different ways he had become more cautious about his safety and about
getting hurt even a scrape would almost send him over the edge always asking questions like
could that scrape lead to Cancer, Sam had been real close to my Father that had died of cancer
Sam had taken the loss very hard then his other grandfather died and on top of all that his world
almost fell apart when his father become sick with his disease Sam had been seeing a child
psychologist to help him deal with his fears and put his little life into perspective once again
watching him now out my kitchen window working on his bike and his friends gathered around
him I felt really good for Sam and knew that by living in that small town it was exactly what I
needed to help me give my children the safe haven they all longed for.
You will come to find out how truly brave my son Sam really was and for our entire family you
know the old saying "To Thy Own Self Be True " well in Sam's case it couldn't have been more
true to him it was real" Wrong is Wrong and Right is Right" and with that way of thinking that
was what helped Sam in his own True Story.
It was a slightly warmer day in Indiana than usual for February usually there would still be snow
on the ground but that day had begun to show signs that an early spring would becoming that year
there was still a slight chill in that gentle wind that was blowing in the air that day not warm
enough to open windows yet but you could still feel the warmth of the sun on everything it
touched Spring was definitely in the air it was a knew beginning for us all that year moving to the
small quaint beautiful little town the kids had settle in and were looking forward to spring break
of course they had all finally adjusted to their new home and new school each one had met a good
friend over the summer vacation which helped on their first day at school even Jim was beginning
to feel a little better about his own health and us moving to that small town we no longer thought
of what we gave up to live in Indiana, I knew Jim needed his family and friends around him at
this point and time in his life.
Especially since we had we had discovered what it was that was wrong with him a Specialist in
Columbus, Missouri had diagnosed Jim with the disease called sygromelia or syrnix for short
which they had found located inside Jim's cervical spinal cord then come the news that their was
know none cure for it and that Jim up to five years before he lived the rest of his life in a
wheelchair so he should live while his body still worked for him and that stress was what made it
grow fast so to try and live his life as much as possible stress free.
Everyone had been through so much the last couple of years moving back to Texas after my
father's death so that I could help my Mother deal with her loss and finances it was hard for any
of us to let him go especially since he was a man that had survived the Korea War W.W.2 and
three tours in Vietnam and still helped raised nine children he made an impact on everyone's life
and he would be dearly missed and thought of so very often .
Jim and I located a home in the country with a small country store on it that was being sold I
remembered the little store when I was a young girl growing up stopping by and chatting with the
owners and how they always made you feel so welcomed to be in there little store the store was
closed and abandon but I could see it's potential once again coming back to life, Jim and I
decided to buy the property and open back up the small country store we did and for the next two
years we poured our heart's and soul into the project it was so therapeutic and healing for me to
recover from the loss of my father and for the kids.
Every now and then Jim and I still wonder just how far our littl
