During the “Great Depression” people often went hungry. Waiting in long lines for a loaf of bread was commonplace. I was raised on a dairy farm during this difficult time. Country living was tough, but we always had enough to eat and were even able to create balanced diets. Unlike the average supermarket of today, the farm provided food that had no additives such as sweeteners and preservatives. The meat was not from hormone injected animals. It was all natural food.
When shopping in most food stores, it is a challenge to find natural products that contain no added sweeteners or chemical preservatives. In recent years, some supermarket chains and specialty stores have introduced health foods and organically grown produce. Locating and purchasing these items is well worth the effort.
Most farmers eat a large breakfast, dinner at noon and then leftovers for supper; thus giving rise to my KING . . . PRINCE . . . PAUPER concept.

About the Author
Elizabeth Ellen (Darling) Heimermann was born on June 16, 1931 in Yalesville in the town of Norfolk, New York. She is the daughter of James Garfield Darling and Eva Elizabeth Cook, formerly of Canada.
When she was less than two years old, the family moved to a farm off the Madrid‑Norfolk Road. It was here that she walked a mile and a half to a one‑room schoolhouse (picture) to receive her elementary education. By the time she was ready for the eighth grade, the one‑room schoolhouse closed. The Madrid school system had centralized and she rode a bus to the new school.
In 1948 she graduated from Madrid Central High School. At the graduation ceremony she was presented with the Danforth Foundation's Women's Leadership Award.
After graduation, she attended the New York Agricultural and Technical Institute in Canton, New York and graduated in June 1950. She has been and is the mother of five children, several grandchildren and one great-grandchild. “Betty” enjoys a variety of activities, including bird watching, gardening, bicycling, cooking, teaching, organizing, writing and singing. Her greatest source of enjoyment, though, is in being a grandmother.
