So, anticipating a quiet afternoon in the outdoor
springs, four middle-aged suburban women naively approached the front desk of
the Vegan Hot Springs. As we paid the
eight bucks for the day, the clerk informed us that the spa is clothing
optional. What? What’s that mean? We needed more information. Are men and women
separated? No!
It was time to huddle.
“What do you think girls? What do you want to do
instead?”
“I saw a sign for a craft show somewhere here in
town,” I said.
They all looked at me and fell silent. After a few
uncomfortable moments we decided to grill the front desk clerk. “Well then, how
many have bathing suits on and how many don’t? Are there many people out there
today? Is the water murky? Do the people look good or like us?”
What do we do?
Abby announced, “No way I’m taking off my suit.”
So, back to the huddle. Abby decided her butt was
too big. Roxy said her breasts were too small. Lucy, like the rest of us, had
too many stretch marks, and I’m just plain too lumpy all over--Finally, I
proposed that if we don’t accept the terms of this challenge, then we have no
story to tell. That settled it; we were on an adventure.

About the Author
Diane Beil received her Journalism degree from
Colorado State University. Since that time she has worked in radio, in catering
and as a grant writer for a non-profit organization. She now works as a
freelance writer in Parker, Colorado, where she lives with her husband Stan,
three children: Tyler, Brian and Kelly and Basset Hound, Dexter. Diane plays Bunco the 2nd Friday of each
month and is still actively involved in the investment club she founded in
1996. This is her first novel.
