About the Book
Author Tim Smith, M.Ed.,
is an expert who practices what he preaches.
Currently a physical education teacher, who also coaches volleyball and
lacrosse in the East Syracuse-Minoa School District, Tim has previously worked
as an exercise physiologist in private practice and as a lecturer in Adelphi
University’s Department of Human Performance Sciences. He has been a member of the National
Strength Coaches Association and the American College of Sports Medicine where
he served on their National Preventive/Rehabilitative Certification Committee
and Fitness Instructor Subcommittee.
In “Sensible Strength
Training,” Smith offers excellent instruction for young student athletes
through easy to read text and over 100 photos, illustrations, tables and
schematics. He understands the special needs of young people with respect to
strength training and helps youngsters maximize their potential while
minimizing their risk of injury.
“Sensible Strength
Training” is Tim’s fifth book. He has
authored over four dozen articles in a number of professional journals as
well. The goal of this text is to
present general strength training concepts and techniques to developing young
people in such a way that they can apply and use them immediately.
About the Author
Tim Smith has been involved in physical education
since 1971 as a student, teacher and coach.
He has a B.S. in Physical Education from Cortland State (1975), an M.A.
in Exercise Physiology from Adelphi University (1980) and a M.Ed. in Applied
Physiology from Columbia University (1983).
He has taught and coached in the Northport-East
Northport (1977-1981) and East Syracuse-Minoa (1991-present) school districts,
served as an adjunct lecturer at Adelphi University (1980-1988) while owning several
fitness related businesses in the private sector and been a host teacher to
Syracuse University students since 1994.
This is Smith’s fifth book in addition to over four
dozen articles in such journals as: American Fitness, Dance Teacher Now,
Fitness Management, JOPERD, Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise,
Strength and Conditioning, The Athletic Journal and Career World.
In addition, he has received such prestigious awards
as: Who’s Who Among American Teachers...1998, Syracuse University’s Award for
Outstanding Service and Contributions to the Educational Community...1999, induction
into the New York State Academy for Teaching and Learning...1999, and the first
annual Ruth Skinner Alumni Award from Adelphi University for Outstanding
Contributions to the Profession...2001.
