Those were the times of silence and complete understanding, and now in the darkness of the cave, he tried to trace the contours of her shape in his mind.
“Blimey. Hurry up, Nathan.” Cavendish’s voice had an anxious edge.
Nathan gave him a soft smile. “I’m eager too.” He came forward and knelt, placing the parchment on the ground between them. Retrieving a pair of battered half-glasses from his upper jacket pocket, he adjusted them on the tip of his nose and read in a quiet voice:
“Seven times we kneel and seven more times we whisper your name …
Oh master of souls … guardian of eternity …”
After completing the litany, Nathan returned the scroll to the pouch. Cavendish looked at him.
“So what happens after the gibberish?”
“Now we wait. Even magic doesn’t work that fast.”
It began with a faint rumble, a mere rasping between two rocks; then abruptly the massive flat boulder ahead moved as if pushed by an invisible giant, and a great noise filled the confines of the cave.
When the stone came to a stop, an opening was visible, beyond which stretched a tunnel at whose end shone a feeble white light.
At its edge there materialized the silhouette of a young woman. Long white hair fell languidly over her bare shoulders, and her pale tunic fluttered ever so slightly in a breeze that didn’t exist. Her complexion reflected universal beauty.
For a moment she stood still, observing them with an ill-defined leer. Then she beckoned them.
Nathan was transfixed. He recognized the face. It was older, but the dark almond-shaped eyes were familiar and the high forehead was one he’d kissed so many times. He’d bitten the succulent lips in dreams, and the body had been his refuge through anguished nights that contained no answers.
“Thamar. My dearest …” his voice trailed off as the words he was trying to form turned to ash in his mouth.
The men exchanged confused and frightened glances.
After an imperceptible hesitation, they stood and walked toward the black hole.
