About the Book

There is no one who has not heard family stories so often that they have not become rote.  It is because of this familiarity that not many has ever thought of the cultural and historical aspects of their family in relation to their home and country.  I have tried to incorporate these tales accented with poems into a time frame about Newfoundland.

I am an only child and I married into a Newfoundland family of eleven siblings.  And as a stranger I was able to sit back, listen, wonder and enjoy the richness of their lives and the land.  I really appreciated this feeling, the warmth, laughter and the joy knowing I was a part of it.

These stories tell about the onset of electrical in town and home and the effects upon the people.  They show the downfall of animal usage for power to that of mechanical power.  There are stories to show the hardships of making a living whether on the sea or land.  And all can be tied to a political system that gave up their unity for confederation with Canada and all its implications.

There are stories of social values, morality and religion that make up the ethos of these particular Newfoundlanders.  However, these stories of one family and friends are comparable to stories found in many other towns, cities and countries.  Perhaps people will associate their recollections with these tales and realize they have a history as well.

About the Author

The author has experienced many adventures as a teacher, athletic coach and as an artistic director/founder of a children's theatrical house.  His ear for stories has helped him write plays for children for his theater group, his church and his school classes.  He has always written stories and poems, but this is his first attempt at publication.  He wishes he could recapture his earlier romantic letters to share with a larger audience.
