It was now 1:30 am on Valentine’s Day. We lay there
for about fifteen minutes, just holding each other. She felt well enough to try to get up into a wheel chair so we
could go see Mason. I got a nurse, and
we were on our way. A silent crowd of
family followed us to the NICU.
“He is so cute and wide awake!” the nurse said as
she came out of the NICU.
With a sense of excitement mixed with fear washing
through me in a cold rush, I wheeled Kimberly back to the unit where we came
upon a little room with a sliding glass door.
There, in a little warmer, was our son.
There were tubes and wires everywhere.
We both approached him in tears.
His eyes immediately opened wide, and he looked at us in
puzzlement. He must have been finally
putting faces with the voices he had heard for nine months.
He had tons of Kimberly’s black curly hair. He also had her dark complexion. He had my eyes and my long skinny legs. He was so beautiful. We held his little
hands and told him how much we loved him.
He was checking everything out.
He was so alert that he seemed older than a newborn. He looked so beautiful and normal. Surely the doctors were wrong. He weighed only five pounds, but he was

as a gift for his wife. After years of
infertility problems and a worrisome pregnancy, he wanted to show his love and
admiration by writing about their journey.
He has written short stories and poems all his life but this is the
first his work has been published. He
resides in South Bend, Indiana with his wife and daughter.
