GOD ANSWERS PRAYER
He knew He would - years before
My father was a minister.
He had answered a call to become pastor of a church that had been a
mission church and was ready to become independent of its mission status - at a
tremendous financial sacrifice. The
church was situated at the outskirts of a fairly large city in an area that was
destined to be a suburban community. He
could foresee that in a few years, “the field would be ripe for the harvest.”
The church paid the small salary of $10 per week. The pulpit committee added $2 if he would do
the janitorial work. There was however a
new five-bedroom, one-bath parsonage, one large enough to house his family. The oldest child was ready for the second
year of college; another was in high school; another in junior high; and
another in elementary school with one ready to start kindergarten.
In the worst of winter weather, coal for the stoker furnace
was about to run out, and there was no money. Registers for all the rooms in the parsonage
had been closed except for the kitchen.
The kitchen door had been shut.
Of all times, a church member came.
She said she could not understand why they kept the house so cold. My mother told my father to put more coal in
the furnace. There was only one shovel
of coal left. So he put in a little,
making a great deal of noise. The church
member did not stay long.
This dilemma had been a matter of prayer during family
worship for several days. My father
believed that the Lord would provide and stated that he was sure that money
would come in the mail. This was the
last day for the prayers to be answered.
No money came in the morning mail.
He said it would be sure to come in the afternoon mail. He didn’t find it. He solicited the help of my mother.
They looked through the mail again. This time, in a plain envelope without a
return address, they found a letter from a former pastorate. The church for the first time had had an
audit of church financial records and had found, that one time during his
pastorate there, the church had been unable to pay his full week’s salary. That had been twenty years earlier.
A check was enclosed.
It was to the penny the amount needed for a ton of coal!

Coincidence? I think not! GOD CARES ABOUT LITTLE THINGS came about when the author began again to read the
Bible through.
Genesis
24 relates the story of Abraham sending his eldest servant back to his home
country to find a wife for Isaac. When the servant arrived, he asked God to
send the right person to him. She was to give water to him and was also to
offer water for all his camels. The scripture says, "And it came to pass,
before he had done speaking, that behold, Rebekah
came." Rebekah met the criteria.
This
led the author to thinking about how God had anticipated her needs and made a
way to meet them. Thus, the book was born. Soon, other people contributed.
The
first story tells how God set in motion the answer to a need 15 years before
the need arose. Other stories deal with how God helps us get ready for our
life' s work, angels watching over us, needs while traveling, in the course ofa day's work, times of illness, and times of special
needs -all in the lives of ordinary people. One lesson learned: God often has a
better plan for us than we envisioned.

attended Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University), Methodist Hospital
School of Nursing in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Indiana University, earning

education administration with a focus on education for international
development. She has held positions in hospitals, public health departments,
