Preface
When I was young I was always
fascinated with photography and was often told that I should study it as my
results were fairly good, even with a less than mediocre camera. So I did. I
went to college and learned all the techniques, theories, and styles and became
very excited to put my talents and knowledge to work.
Suddenly, friends started coming to me
when they needed a photographer for their weddings or for their friends’
weddings. Of course, I thought I was ready at that point for the professional wedding
photography business and boy was I in for a surprise. It was nothing like
working with friends. It was saturated by high emotions, over-expectant brides,
and really experienced photographers.
Between the constant criticism, damaged
sense of confidence, and pure humiliation, I knew I was out of my league. I
made a commitment to find out as much as I could about the business from everyone’s
perspective. Instead of beating myself up for not being as good as another
photographer, I stopped feeling inferior and started studying why they were
better. I studied the emotions a bride feels and how other vendors performed.
And now, after 20 years of photographing weddings, I am committed to sharing
some of these experiences and lessons with you to help reduce your learning
curve--a curve that most people experience and walk away from without the
satisfaction of accomplishment.
I left the business once--frustrated,
defeated, and humiliated...and came back because of the passion for the art and
the rewarding feeling of sharing incredible moments that often no one in the
world can experience. Today, I have a strong and thriving business that has
attracted many customers because of that passion and the ability to see a
unique moment with every wedding.
