Golfing in Jesus’ Spirit
An Old Golfer’s Amazing Story
What Next ? “Fasten your seatbelts,” the flight attendant announced. “ Prepare for
takeoff.” As Joe Weaver waited, a weariness spread through his body. He had
expected a letdown after the successful television series in Hong Kong, but not this big a one. He
doubted whether he could ever again get
as excited as he was in promoting the programs about Pastor Watanabe’s
exploits.
In the past he never allowed his age to color his
outlook. Now suddenly, he was viewing life as what was, not as what could be.
He felt he had fulfilled all his life goals. What more possibly could there be?
The plane jerked and began to taxi forward. He
turned to stare at Anita, his wife. He wondered if the two of them were finally
on the last lap of their fifty years together.
He wanted to ask her what she was thinking, but held back. He didn’t
want to intrude on her thoughts.
Had they now
come to the plateau of doldrums retirees reach when they’ve done everything and
seen all they’ve wanted to? Is he approaching the dead end of life?
He recalled three years before when he was diagnosed
with prostate cancer. The doctor gave him two options: “You can leave it alone
and probably live another ten years. Or, you can treat it aggressively with
radiation and live longer.” Joe quickly did the math and answered, “I want to
be around long enough to see my eight-year-old granddaughter married. I opt for
radiation.”
Noticing that Anita’s eyes had opened, he asked,
“What comes next in our lives?”
“Next?”
“Yes, next. God never leaves us without a goal.”
“Can’t you take it easy for a while? You’ve done all
you can for the Watanabe story. Isn’t it time to devote yourself to golf?” She
smiled. “From now on it’s up to the people of Hong Kong to defend their liberties.
Let Reardon and the videos keep the Watanabe story alive.”
“But,
seriously, what is next for us?” The plane thrust forward and began to speed
down the runway to liftoff for Tokyo.
