About the Book

Defending the Middle Half:  an Approach to Defensive Basketball presents a system of half court defense that has been used successfully at both the high school and University level.  The primary goal of this system is to force the offense away from the middle of the court and high percentage shots.  It is predicated on the idea that an aggressive defense that takes away the middle of the court will force opponents to settle for lower percentage shots.  In this system the defense dictates where and how the game will be played.  There is nothing passive about this defensive system.  The mindset of defenders is one of attack.  Once employed the players take pride in the reputation they earn of being a tough defensive team.  Over the years this system has helped teams with less talent defeat teams with more talent on a regular basis.  Players of average ability can be taught this system of defensive play to maximize their individual talents for the benefit of the team.   Hard work, unselfishness and a willingness to learn are the pre-requisites for successfully implementing this defensive system.

About the Author

Bret Tovani has coached at the high school level for over thirty years and most recently assisted at Dominican University where he had major responsibility for the defense.  While at the high school level his teams consistently finished at the top defensively allowing the fewest points per game.  In his one year at Dominican University, not only did the school win the championship but they finished number two in the nation in points allowed.

Coach Tovani believes in the oft used phrase "Defense wins Championships".  His teams earned the respect of their opponents as a result of their hard nosed approach especially at the defensive end.
