About the Book
The She-bird Song is a fantasy for adults. The characters are Farmer George, Sheriff Tester, Mayor Loinhart, Judge Gateman, Mr Fox and two red hens.
The hens jump over Farmer George’s wall to escape from Mr Fox. Farmer George catches the hens in a net and take them to the Sheriff who puts them in jail. They are taken before Judge Gateman who effects a satisfactory conclusion; the hens may peck bugs in Farmer George’s garden if they promise they won’t peck his plants.
All is well until Mr Fox digs a hole under the wall and tries to take one of the hens.
Farmer George acts on the advice of Mayor Loinhart, but this gives him another problem.
About the Author
Margaret Harmon taught a fifth grade class in
The children created the characters, named them, and invented the dialogue and the action in the story.
The class discussed the notion of conflict and how it was a necessary part of the story.
When the story was finished Miss Harmon did some rearranging, if necessary, to bring the resolution to a probable end.
The children drew pictures of the characters and copies were made so each child could make a book of the story and take it home.
