“Matt, you and Dan will need
invisible tote bags,” Bonnie told me. “I made them myself. They are invisible
so you can’t see what’s in them. They are big enough to hold any invisible
thing you could think of. They are big enough to stand up in if you become
invisible,” she said as she handed us our cosmic backpacks. I didn’t think
Bonnie made much sense when she said that.
“Matt, do you want a Deja
vu machine?” asked Shelly.
“What does it do?” I asked.
“It’s a cosmic tape player,” she
told me as I fit the pack on my back. It wasn’t really a tote bag but more like
a backpack. Shelly handed me the invisible wire recorder and I put it in the
backpack. ”It will remind you of things in case you forget,” she continued.
“What good is it?” I asked.
“Walk me home and I will explain it to you,” Bonnie
told me as she took my hand.
“Bonnie and Matthew sitting in a tree,” started Dan.
“Bonnie Knight, you are the
prettiest girl in school,” I told her. “I would build a platform for you to
look down on everyone else. I would make it out of silver and I would look at
you like the statue of Venus. I would adore you from the ground.”
“If I fell, I would break. I
would shatter into a million parts on the ground,” she said.
“I would catch you.” I thought
for a moment. “I would make a net and catch you. Or you could hand me a line
and I could climb up to you.”
“I am afraid of heights,” she
frowned.
“I would build a trampoline or a cannon to shoot myself up to you. All you have to do is
catch me, or will your soulmate mind?” Then Bonnie
looked at me with a dead pan look.
“You are my soulmate,
Matthew. I have a pair of scissors in my backpack I think you will need,” she
said as she handed me the scissors. They were golden. “Take the Moon card, you can give me a hand up. What card do you have?” she
asked me.
“I have the Fool card that you
gave me.” I turned to see her eyes. “Keep the Moon card. It will give me
something to look forward to,” I continued.
“Give me back the Fool and take
the Moon and let me look up to you,” she said with a smile.
“If you don’t make a place for me
I will never find you. I need the Fool to walk across the deck. You are my
life. Without you, I wouldn’t want anything,” I told her as we stopped walking.
She held my hand tight and kissed me.
“I love you, Matt. You are a fool
but I love you. If you die before--” I cut Bonnie off in mid sentence.
“If I don’t find you again by the
next century, every thing we planned is for nothing. You will know when the
curses are broken, you will spin like a top,” I told her.
“I am so drawn to you like a
magnet. I never want to leave you but if you don’t make it. I mean if I find
out anything happened to you, I would kill myself,” Bonnie said as she held me.
Her eyes were glowing and misty. “I want you to promise me that you will be peaceful.
No fighting and that you will love me to the end of time.”
“I will love you till the end of
time,” I told her. “We are only in the second grade. A lot can happen between
now and the end of time.”
