Lefty the Loggerhead Turtle

About the Book

“Go Lefty, Go Lefty!”  Lee County Florida students chant as they participate in a story play of the children’s book Lefty the Loggerhead Turtle.  They have witnessed “Lefty’s” life from a small hatchling seeking the moonlight to a mature turtle forced to cope with the loss of a front flipper.

What is it the physically challenged Canadian suggests as a solution that has many shaking their heads in disbelief?  Can a prosthesis—yes, a prosthesis, return the crippled sea turtle to the life he once knew?  Sounds incredible, but adults will join their children and cheer!  Everyone wishes the loveable sea creature will meet his own life’s challenges and return to his ocean paradise at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys.

This compelling children’s book will easily become the hands-on favorite for those who know a winner and cheer for his success.

About the Author

For many years, Hale Bremer, a former teacher in Wisconsin schools and a local university, taught creative writing.  He retired to the Florida Keys in 1990 to live by the sea.  It was there he became interested in marine turtles, their life cycles, habits and world status.

Visits to marine turtle habitats and preserves in Hawaii, Costa Rica and the Mexican Yucatan have increased his commitment for sea turtle preservation.

Each year Bremer and his wife share Lefty the Loggerheard Turtle with hundreds of students in Florida’s Lee County schools in an effort to pique their interest in reading, writing and turtle preservation.
