Routine Maintenance:
What can the vehicle owner do in
regards to maintenance? Today’s modern
vehicle is a very complex machine. It
has many electronic parts, and is computer controlled. There is not much mechanical work that the
back yard mechanic can do if he/she does not have the proper knowledge and
equipment. One thing that you can do is
to find a mechanic who has gained your trust, and who you are comfortable with
doing the work on your vehicle. You have choices in this matter. First of all, there is the dealer where the
vehicle was purchased. There is the
neighborhood garage, if you are so lucky to still have one. Then there are the specialty shops, the quick
lubes, the muffler shop, and the brake and shock stores. Finding a trusted business is very important
in the maintenance of your vehicle.
To find a good repair shop I
would suggest that you look around, get references from family, friends, and
people you work with. You may check with
the Chamber of Commerce also.
Check to be sure that the repair
work will be covered by a warranty, at least for a reasonable time. Warranty
work may have to be done at the dealership.
For example: "NOTE: Know the terms and conditions of the vehicle's
warranty. If you know exactly what is
covered, you may be forced to have the repairs done at the dealership rather
than another repair shop. Taking the
vehicle elsewhere may void the warranty coverage."
Do not look only at the price of
the repair. Remember, you are paying for
professionalism and technical knowledge too.
Look for certified technicians like those who display the ASE symbol
which indicates a high degree of training and skill.
Oil Changes & Lubrication

Oil- liquid used to lubricate the engine
Synthetic oil- a man made oil used for lubrication, usually
more expensive, and maybe better for the engine.
Oil filter- a device that screws to the engine block to
filter the oil as it passes through the filter element.
Dip Stick- the rod used to measure the level of the oil in
the engine. Found under the hood.
Oil filler- location on the engine where oil is added, usually a
cap or a rubber plug,
