I just happened to turn on the television at the exact time I was
supposed to because I got the message I needed to hear. Olivia
Newton-John was talking about her experience with breast cancer.
She said that when she told some of her Buddhist friends she had
been diagnosed with breast cancer, they told her “Congratulations;
you will grow from this”. I knew all too well what they meant.
Not only did I survive breast cancer, which had spread, but an
incurable and disabling illness.
You see, in the summer of 1999 I was diagnosed with multiple
sclerosis, a permanent disease of the central nervous system that
causes the body’s own immune system to eat away at the myelin
sheath or protective coating around the nerves in the brain and
spinal cord leaving “scars”. These scars result in a wide range of
sensory and motor dysfunction. It had been just over .ve years
since the severe roll over car accident, which landed me in the
hospital for three weeks and left me with permanent orthopedic
and neurological damage.
I was lucky to be alive is what the I.C.U nurses told me. I had
been ejected from my vehicle as it rolled at approximately 55mph.
There were no injuries to any vital organs or even any serious
scratches on my face. There was definitely at least one guardian
angel looking after me that day! All of the damage had occurred
to the pelvic bones and spine with some impact to my head, but
not enough to cause a loss of consciousness for very long.
That was the second time I had survived a roll over car
accident. It would be the beginning of my major medical and
physical problems. I was not driving for the first one in June of
1989; I had been sitting in the front passenger seat.
I have often said “ I guess I got my real estate license so I
would know how to buy a house and my midwifery license so
I would know how to have a baby.” But not even the 90 units
towards a degree in nursing had prepared me or given me the
know how to cope with the number of medical challenges I have
had in the last 10 years.

She has struggled with the church, and how Christianity was presented to her, living most of her life as a person who believed in God and felt that religion only interfered with one’s spirituality.
God, with the love of His son lifted Jami up and began the long process of chipping away the years of pain. He saw something in her, a loyalty to Him, that from a very young age she would let no man-made religion or rituals change. A strong character that makes Jami a survivor with an equally strong will that only He can command.
Jami says, My flesh has been so broken that now I live for Him. Whatever the Lord wants to use me and my life for is fine with me; I have surrendered it all to Him.
While shopping on my electric wheelchair scooter, I frequently hand out “God Bless You” cards; especially wanting to reach those I see using assistive devices such as canes, walkers and wheelchairs.
There is no more “rush, rush, rush” all the time. I live with a certain peace about me that was not previously there.
If we are to make an impact in this world with our faith, we must “Come out from them and be separate.” Let’s stop “playing church” my brothers and sisters. As Christians, it is critical that we be in the world and not of it so that others may look at us and see The Truth of Jesus Christ.
