Not looking very happy, and playing his part well, Jim asked, “do you people make it a habit to point loaded weapons at a federal marshal?”
Looking a little stunned, the guards lowered their guns as Barney complained, “how are we supposed to know who’s coming through that door?”
“Point well taken, men”, Jim admitted.
Looking down to see the man he knew as Marshal Creek staring back at him, Jim winked as he said, “what do you guys have here?”
“Ropes are waiting on these two when we arrive in
“They must be dangerous desperados, huh?”, Jim inquired as he and the mail clerk moved forward to inspect the mail bags.
“That’s Robert Younger and Mike Dalton handcuffed to the railing”, Barney boasted.
While Jim pretended to inspect the mail bags for security, he commented, “I thought those two were dead?”
“Not by a long shot”, Barney laughed as he added, “at least not until the blue coats at the territorial prison try stretching their necks in a few hours”.
“Are you going to be turning in a favorable report about my mail car and how I handle the mail, marshal”, the mailing clerk interrupted, asking.
“Everything seems to be in order according to the head office”, Jim smiled.
Still seeing Marshal Creek staring at him, Jim continued playing his part in saying, “this is one of a few trains I have inspected for security that have had such care in handling the mail service bags. You should be proud”.
Well of course the mail clerk was tickled to hear that he had been doing so well. Jim noticed that the guards must be buying what he was selling too. They had lowered their weapons and seemed to be more relaxed in his presence. Perhaps this was the right time to make his move? But what was his next move going to be? Jim could feel his heart beginning to pound faster and faster. He was excited about living out his fantasy of being a rough and rugged cowboy in the west. But what was he going to do now? A very nervous feeling seemed to grip him. He had to free his friend. That’s what this trip was all about. Would he be able to draw his weapon and shoot someone if he needed to?
While Jim had been stalling for time in the forward section of the car, Barney disturbed his train of thought when he asked, “are you two about done over there?”.
“We are about finished, yes”, Jim replied as he slowly moved over towards the prisoners near the railing they were still handcuffed to.
Jim could tell that his friend was ready to move. All he had to do was slip his friend a gun, and the fight to free them would be on.
“I think you two really need to leave this area now”, Barney ordered, “it just isn’t safe in here with these outlaws in the same car as decent folks”.
“We’re leaving”, Jim told the man, “and have a good day”.
There were only moments left to react. As Jim moved nearer to his friend while on his way towards the rear door of the mail car, he quickly pulled out an extra colt .44 from his duster pocket.
