About the Book

Young Frank and Rudy must do most of the tasks on their Missouri farm. Because of a family loss, they are saddened, but they bravely move on. Life is not all work for them, though, for they have wonderful times fishing for “the big one” and swimming in their muddy pond. Then one day their father shocks them with the happy announcement “You are going to attend the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair”.

During their time at the fair, the sons meet a brother they have never seen, discover a glorious new era of invention, and have their first taste of a beverage called “iced tea”.

The journey is magic for them both, but even moreso for Frank when he meets a girl named Grace.

About the Author

Joy Dawson lived for two short periods of time in the very house her grandfather built (see picture inside). The story comes from accounts given her by her father, Rudy and Frank, her uncle. She has embellished the events when there was no information to be had, even using some of her own experiences while living in the old farmhouse, but much of the story is true. The facts about the fair come from relatives and from personal research.

Joy has had a long teaching career in English, drama and reading; reared four sons; has eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her interest in the 1904 World’s Fair stems from her grandfather’s corn entry for the state of Missouri and from the great developments of that period of history
