For instance, if we were going to convert text data on a PC to a database on the same PC, we would probably have a good idea what the text data looked like, and what the data base table is to be. In addition, we would probably use some import tool to move the data from the text file to data tables. We could use a simple diagram as shown below to represent the move.
By providing this diagram (Topography), as simple as it may appear, several things are obvious:
- The data to be converted is on PC-1, a personal computer or workstation
- It is located on disc on PC-1.
- The conversion will be from a text file to database.
- No special communication protocol is required.
- No special security is needed.
Of course, most conversion projects are not this simple. The level of complexity gets higher with each additional hardware component, database component, or communication protocol.
